Tennis on Campus
We are so excited about our rapidly growing Tennis on Campus program! This is a new focus for the USTA and a great opportunity for the college student who wants to play tennis in a fun, social, yet competitive atmosphere. Virginia already has many Tennis on Campus programs at many schools throughout the state. In fact, the program is growing so fast that we have a created a new Mid-Atlantic Tennis on Campus Tournament Series for all teams throughout the Mid-Atlantic Section!

The USTA’s Tennis On Campus program was developed to promote and support the expansion of recreational tennis on college campuses across the country. The program focuses on providing coed team play opportunities for the entire campus community through sport club tennis teams and intramural tennis programs.
The Tennis On Campus program follows the collegiate academic schedule. Therefore, the beginning of the season starts in the fall, play continues through the winter, and it ends in the spring. Play throughout the year is often scheduled by the clubs themselves, but there are quite a few new Tennis On Campus Leagues out there that offer structured play throughout the academic year. The leagues then lead into the Tennis On Campus post-season: USTA Campus Championship - Section events and the USTA National Campus Championship!
What is the format for play?
Tennis on Campus uses the World Team Tennis format which includes 1 men’s singles, 1 women’s singles, 1 men’s doubles, 1 women’s doubles and 1 mixed doubles set. Teams must have a minimum of 4 players (2 men, 2 women) and a maximum of 10 players.
What tournaments are offered throughout the school year?
The USTA/Virginia Tennis Fall Invitational is run by the USTA/Virginia office and played annually in the Fall. Any team throughout the Nation is allowed to play in this tournament. Many schools are now starting to host tournaments of their own throughout the year, most of which are part of the Mid-Atlantic Tennis on Campus Tournament Series. The USTA Campus Championships – Mid-Atlantic is the regional event held annually in February. This event is open to all club teams in the Mid-Atlantic region (Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland & DC) and is a pre-requisite for the National Campus Championships.
What is the USTA National Campus Championship?
This premier event invites the best teams throughout the nation to this tournament. It is a 64 team draw, with the majority of spots automatically given to the teams that place in the top of their Section Campus Championships. The other 24 spots are first-come-first-serve. The 2010 Campus Championships were held in Surprise, AZ April 16-18. Check out photos and video from the event!
