Richmond to Host Inaugural USTA Jr. Team Tennis Tournament

On February 15, some of the top junior players will compete in the USTA/Virginia Jr. Team Tennis Richmond Winter Wildcard Invitational. It is the first of its kind in Virginia, combining aspects of team tennis and tournaments for the 18 and Under participants.

Richmond’s JTT coordinator, Shannon Scarvey, noticed this untapped opportunity to play team tennis during the winter.

“By using a shortened scoring format, and having all the matches be played over the course of a weekend, it helped answer two challenges to team tennis,” said Scarvey. “We were able to entice more tournament players, as well as solve the limited indoor court time issue.”

Space was limited to eight teams – four 18U Intermediate and four 18U Advanced. It will be a round robin format, with each team playing one match per day for a total of three team matches over the course of the weekend (Feb. 15-17).

Each team match consists of one boys singles, one girls singles, one boys doubles, one girls doubles, and one mixed doubles. The scoring for each individual match will be one six game pro set with a tiebreaker (first to seven, win by two) at five all, with no ad scoring.

The winner of each flight will be determined by the total games won, and will advance to the USTA/Virginia Jr. Team Tennis District Championships on Aug. 2-4.

All the matches will be played on indoor clay courts at Midlothian Tennis Club, located just south of Richmond.

There are a total of 58 players set to participate. Of the 31 players participating in the 18U Advanced flight, more than half are ranked in the top 50 of last year’s final state tournament rankings – while seven of those players are ranked in the top 15.

“It should be a wonderful weekend of team tennis, and I am very excited to hold this local league pilot event in Richmond,” comments Scarvey. “The interest in this event helps prove the need for more team tennis opportunities in Virginia – especially for tournament players during the winter season.”

The event is supported by the Richmond Tennis Association, the Midlothian Tennis Club, and USTA/Virginia Tennis.

USTA/VA releases the tournament schedule for the 2013 Truong Wheelchair Tennis Grand Prix

The Truong Wheelchair Tennis Grand Prix has released its upcoming tournament schedule. Started by USTA/Virginia Tennis and with the Truong Rehabilitation Center as the title sponsor and USTA/Mid-Atlantic as a presenting sponsor, the Wheelchair Tennis Grand Prix hopes to build on previous year’s success with greater participation and even better events. These events allow players in the ever-growing wheelchair division to have more opportunities to play in USTA sanctioned events as well as engage in the social activities provided by the individual tournaments, such as player parties and Run/Roll Socials. Our hope is to continue building the circuit, both in participation numbers and events. The 2013 Grand Prix will feature two tournaments with new dates covering three states – Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.

The season now starts the weekend of April 5-7 with the Truong Wheelchair Tennis Grand Prix Tournament #1 at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex at Empie Park in Wilmington, NC. The remainder of the Circuit consists of the Midlothian Athletic Club Wheelchair Open (Richmond, VA), the Baltimore Wheelchair Tennis Classic (Owings Mill, MD), the Truong Wheelchair Tennis Grand Prix Tournament #4 (Fredericksburg, VA) and the USTA/Virginia Wheelchair Open (Williamsburg, VA) as the season-ending finale.
