WTA Pro Visits Northern Virginia Tennis Club

Mount Vernon Athletic Club hosted a very special guest as part of the invitation only United States Tennis Association – USTA (Official) Competition Training Center Clinic June 3, 2012. Brenda Shultz-McCarthy, best known for breaking the record for the fastest women’s serve (130 mph) last held by Venus Williams (127mph), gave tips and inspiration to the players. Each player even had the opportunity to return serve from the tennis great. In 1996 she reached World No. 9, and in 1995 reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

The CTC clinic is an elite tennis program for under 12’s. The program offers coaching with an added nutritional component, video analysis and tennis-specific cross training. Tim Bainton, Director of the Blue Chip Tennis Academy, a division of Mount Vernon Athletic Club, had this to say about Shultz’ visit, “This is an incredible opportunity for the kids to learn from a distinguished tennis champion.”

Shultz-McCarthy was impressed with the talent of the 30+ children on hand and was very complementary of the program, advising the players to, “Listen to your coaches here, they have taught you well!” Also on hand with Bainton at the Blue Chip Academy were his staff, Patrick Escambre, Matt Krawczyk, David Bryan and Daniel Masakayan. Guest instructors included Nebyu Retta (Fairfax Racquet Club) and Jeremy Carl (Head Professional at the Arlington YMCA).
